On the Go Make Up

During the summer, my usual delight in applying makeup goes by the wayside.  The conscientious buffing of liquid foundations that I enjoyed in the spring is replaced with a slap and dash approach once the temperatures rise.  This mad dash to “put on my face” is exacerbated the summer hours I have worked . . . and my tendency to sleep in till the very last moment.  If I could take the bus in my pajamas and not look like a crack head, I probably would.

In any event, over the past month, I have gotten my makeup down to five products that can be applied in five minutes or less and still leave me with a fresh, natural, and polished summer look.  Here are the staples:

Protecting your skin from the sun is an important aspect of a summer look. Before I begin any makeup look I’ll either slap on primer with SPF under my foundation or I’ll apply a mineral sunscreen before I hit the road and use it to top up my makeup throughout the day.  Unless I am looking like a grease ball, I’ll always moisturize, let the product sink in and apply an SPF over the moisturizer.  After the SPF has settled into my skin, I begin my makeup look.

I always begin by blending in a high coverage liquid concealer over my under-eye circles and any redness around my nose, forehead, and chin.  I usually use a stippling brush to lightly buff the product in.  My go-to concealers are the OriginsPlantscription concealer and the Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-In-Place concealer; I wear the “light” shade in both.

MAC Studio Fix Foundation is a powder foundation formula that I have been using for various purposes for the past couple of years.  If you press the powder into the skin with a kabuki brush, you can create a flawless medium to full coverage finish in a minute tops.  During the colder months, I like to use this product as a setting powder over liquid foundations in order to prolong their wear.  In the summer I am an NC25, in the wintery months I am an NC20.

During the summer months I occasionally get a slight tan; since I don’t want to guild the lily (or look like a drag queen) I usually give bronzer a miss and instead opt for a longwearing blush on my cheeks.  Some of my favorite summertime blushes are NARS Deep Throat, Benefit Coralista, MAC Mineralize Blush in Warm Soul, MACFleur Power, and Tarte Blissful.

Since I am a sweaty betty with oily skin, I need to wear a waterproof mascara during the summer.  My favorite high end waterproof mascara is Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Splashes.  I have gone swimming in this mascara and it’s still been presentable enough to go in public without redoing my mascara.  L’OrealTelescopic Shocking Extensions Waterproof is my favorite drugstore pick, but please note that while this formula will stay put during the day, you may see some wear if you go swimming.

Finally, I usually round out my makeup look with a lip balm.  When it’s hot out, I can’t be bothered to reapply a lip gloss or lipstick every hour; quite frankly, I can barely stand anything when it’s hot.  When I am going out, I try to make sure that I am wearing a makeup with SPF so I don’t have to worry about my lips getting burned; believe me, it does happen.  My favorite non-SPF lipbalm is the Nivea Olive Oil and Lemon one. The Soft Lips Intense Moisture and Breath Freshening balm has an SPF 15 and is my favorite on the go lip product.

The cool thing about this makeup look is that if I am super pressed for time, I can toss my makeup bag into my satchel and apply all of the products on the go . . . though I would recommend bus primping noobs to wait until a stoplight to apply their mascara.

What products do you use for a quick makeup look?  What products are helping you get through the summer months?
